This messy life

I cleaned my car out on a gloriously sunny day last weekend.

You know when you clean something and you realise how long it’s been since you actually saw the actual surface beneath all the dirt and detritus of life?

The mountains of sand!!

My initial, kneejerk response? Horrified! Ashamed. Judgey.

How could I have let it get so dirty? Why has it taken so long to clean it up?

But you know what came next?

Appreciation.

Because the biggest contributors to the mess are also some of the biggest sources of joy in my life.

Mountains of sand. From regular jaunts to the beach, usually with the dogs.

The joy!

and the doggy smell…

The wrappers and cans in the backseat from the teenagers. Who I delight in knowing and realise that their presence in my car is increasingly rare - and precious.

The gym gear wedged in the corners. From the now-regular routine for me and my partner - a new shared habit we’ve been doing since January that is giving us energy and something to complain about together.

The five water bottle containers. And the three tubes of lip gloss. A sign of my commitment to giving myself what I really need to thrive.

And appreciation for my still-pearly trusty car that I bought when I was newly single and have now paid off. A reminder of growth in my ability to look after myself and create a life I love.

What are you appreciating in your messy life?
